Broncos cut Trapasso; Pick up Kolby Smith

And then there was one.  The Broncos cut punter A.J. Trapasso on Tuesday, leaving Britton Colquitt standing alone as the Broncos’ punter heading into training camp.  As long as Colquitt can do better than Mitch Berger (who ranked 25th in punting last year), the job should be his – although that is not to say that he probably won’t see SOME competition somewhere along the way during training camp.  But still, if Britton can replicate his college performance average of 43.9 yards per punt, he would be definite upgrade at the punter for the Broncos.

In other news, the Broncos picked up KC cast-off, Kolby Smith, from the waiver wire.

After an unremarkable college career,  Smith failed to impress NFL scouts with his performance in the 2006 Senior Bowl.  As a result, Kolby  lasted until the 5th round of the 2007 (148th overall) where he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Although the Broncos will probably give the third year running back a look for short yardage situations, a place the Broncos have struggled in the past few years, Kolby’s durability is a major concern with as he has ended the last two seasons on IR (2008 – Knee; 2009 Ankle).

My spider sense tells me he doesn’t make it past the first round of camp cuts.
