Well, Bronco fans, something I expected last season, finally happened: The Denver Broncos have parted ways with GM Brian Xanders. It’s not being reported what led up this development, but I don’t think it’s much of a jump to suggest the lack luster grades the Broncos received for their draft two weeks ago has a lot to do with it.
That’s not to say the Bronco’s have a bad draft class, but Brian never struck me as a guy who likes value picks. He’s always seemed like a more sizzle than steak kind of guy when it came to his draft picks (see draft 2009).
Elway is about streamlining, about efficiency, about maximizing the bang for your buck, and this year’s draft shows that. It’s for this reason, I think both parties realized they weren’t a good fit for each other and decided to part ways.
Whatever the reason, this team now almost completely under the Duke’s thumb, and only time will tell if John has as much magic off the field as he did on.
The Broncos agreed to sign thirteen undrafted rookies this weekend. I wouldn’t be surprised if half of these guys make the team, and here’s hoping that one (if not more) of these undrafted gems can be the next Rod Smith.
In a simple tweet, the 16-year career for Denver’s All-Pro Safety, Brian Dawkins, came to an end:
The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years. I would like to thank the Eagles & the Broncos 4 believing In me. I would like 2 thank all my teammates & Coaches that I have been blessed 2 go to battle with. Along with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that i have enjoyed tremendously. In other words. I am announcing my retirement from the NFL. #BBTB
Dawkins has spent three years with the Broncos, heading to the Pro Bowl in two of them. He accumulated 233 tackles, five sacks, three interceptions, defensed 21 passes, forced four fumbles and recovered three fumbles. He is one of just three players in league history with at least 35 career interceptions and 20 career sacks.
Although, he wasn’t with the Broncos for a majority of his career, Dawkins quickly became the heart and soul of the Denver D. Along with cornerback Champ Bailey, Brian made Denver’s secondary one of the league’s most fearsome.
Dawk, you and your leadership will be greatly missed.
